It is with immense joy that I am sharing with you my friend Ben Wu’s magnificent art. In 2007, he and I collaborated upon a wonderful project (well, I wrote the short text, an act barely worth notice): a booklet entitled The Quiet Professor, featuring 16 ink drawings. He illustrated my vocation in a marvelously whimsical way. His images are amazing, intricate, filled with spiritual symbolism and gentleness. This lovely, peaceful volume contains a collection of “anecdotes and stories” or, as Ben Wu wrote, “pearls of wisdom [that] will both delight your heart and illuminate your soul.” In Blossoms Gathered at Dusk, Wu compiled the sayings of his muse, “the venerated Madame Li Huarui, a scholarly centenarian who now lives as a recluse in a small town in the United States.” Madame Li shares her lyrical insights about subjects as varied as “peace of mind,” “change,” “a simple meal,” “poetry” and “The Summer House of Infinite Joy,” to name but a few. Reading this charming book gives one the impression of sitting in a tranquil oriental garden, and there being taught the most important of lessons. To quote Madame Li, “Be gentle, for there will be a time when your heart aches and you will long for someone to comfort you.”
